Side-by-Side

Monday, September 7, 2020 to Friday, October 30, 2020

Barbara and Craig Snapp have been married and exploring Maine for 52 years.  When they moved permanently to Brunswick in 2003, they both began seriously to capture Maine’s beauty in art.  Craig is a photographer;  Barbara works with paint and soft pastels.  They often find that the same landscape appeals to both of them.  This show presents a sampling of their independent expressions of Maine’s unique features.

Many images are from scenes around Petit Manan Point in Steuben where Barbara came every summer as a child and where Craig and Barbara now have a vacation cottage.  The other images are from Baxter State Park and the surrounding wilderness.

For information about purchasing artwork, contact Barbara (bsnapp@povartistsmaine.com) or Craig (snappcp1316@gmail.com).

Title Work(s)
Katahdin Journey – Mountain of the People of Maine

(from Lake Millinocket)

by Barbara Snapp

watercolor, 12" x 16"

Percival Baxter’s gift to Maine continues to inspire hikers, naturalists and artists.  Meaning “Greatest Mountain”, Katahdin is sacred to the Penobscot.

Baxter State Park has been a favorite destination for us and we have journeyed there seven times. We have climbed Mt Katahdin on 4 of those trips – but the view from a distance shows the mountain’s majesty more than a view from its top.

Katahdin Journey – from Hamlin Ridge

by Barbara Snapp

soft pastel, 18” x 26”

The fall foliage brings a bright splash of color to this view of Mt Katahdin – from Pamola Peak on the left to Baxter Peak on the right with the Knife Edge in between.

The view from Hamlin Ridge shows the bowl at Chimney Pond and the flanks of Mt Katahdin.  In the far distance – beyond the lakes and the coastal hills – you can catch a glimpse of the ocean.

Identical views create different impressions as the medium shifts from colorful pastels to infrared photography, from a soft sunset to a stark alternate reality.
