Community Under Pressure
Flatbed Center for Contemporary Printmaking in Austin, TXFeaturing Judith H LongJudith Long is one of 14 member artists showing work in the exhibition, “Community Under Pressure”, which opens August 21 in Austin, TX. Presented by Flatbed Center for Contemporary Printmaking, this is the first annual Community Press members’ exhibition.
Despite Covid-19, the Community Press membership has been growing, with members safely creating work during the pandemic. Their work ranges in scale and technique, and includes intaglio, relief, lithography, screen printing, and monotype.
Long is showing four works, including Fomentation III.i, a polymer direct gravure intaglio print, plus two variations. Her Fomentation series arose out of the swirling discontent, viral disruptions, climate changes and economic collapse we currently experience in our world.
Fomentation III.ii was created for the Covid Quilt project, a 24 panel digital print created by 20 artist members of Circling the Square Fine Art Press and Art Dogs in Gardiner. The ephemeral “quilt” is attached to the back wall of Circling the Square with wheat paste and will survive the elements for about 6 months.
Fomentation III.iii, the second variation, has a split fountain background of plum, blue-gray and warm yellow with the original 12 x 12” plate inked in Paynes Gray on a full plate collé on Ogura natural lace paper.
The fourth work in the Flatbed exhibit is a monotype titled Organic Schism. It was also accepted into the 7th Biennial FOOTPRINT International Competition 2020 and is described in that event announcement.
